SOS - Children

Unfortunately there are a lot of small citizens on our planet who, for a variety of reasons, do not have a home or any adults to take care of them. So what could be a good family substitution for a child?

One of the best forms of childcare for children left without parental care is found in institutions such as SOS Children’s Villages, which have a family-based childcare system. Serious work is carried out in advance to ensure that only those children for whom family-based child care will be of the greatest benefit, are accepted into an SOS Children’s Village. The Child Acceptance Committee is in charge of the admittance of children to an SOS Children’s Village. The Committee co-operates with the state’s childcare and guardianship authorities and at the same time an appropriate state social worker might also be included on the Committee staff as a consultant.

Orphans and children left without parental care or relatives to look after them are accepted into an SOS Children’s Village. In some cases children whose parents have had their parental rights juridically terminated might also be accepted. Since the longer the child is a member of the family the more successful its education is likely to be, an age limit must necessarily be placed and children over the age of ten are normally accepted only with younger brothers and sisters. Children with minor physical and mental disabilities are only examined as candidates to the Village if an SOS family is able to satisfy their special needs. Children with severe mental and physical disabilities are sent to alternative special child care institutions equipped to solve their specific problems.
